Planning For Healthy Communities Recently,
CURE challenged the construction of an affordable housing
complext next to railroad switching yards where trains idle
for hours a day. The California Air Quality Board has documented
the serious health risks associated with exposure to diesel
and has recommended that local communities attmept to avoid
such exposures. Click here for regs.
The challenged project also sited the housing development
on the outskirts of the community, rather than incorporating
it into areas with existing shopping, schools, or other public
services. This was done despite the availability of land in
the downtown area that was suitable for infill developments.
Such policies promote sprawl, unnecessarily increase traffic,
and isolate the poor. The outcome of CURE's challenge is still
pending.
